Salary to Hourly Calculator
Divide an annual salary by the hours in the year. The year starts as 40 hours a week times 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours. $52,000 on that schedule is $25 an hour.
Estimate for personal reference only. Not tax, legal, or employment advice. Overtime defaults follow a federal FLSA-style workweek, usually 1.5× after 40 hours. State and city rules may differ.
The division
Hourly rate = annual salary / (hours per week × weeks per year). That is the whole salary to hourly calculator. $52,000 / (40 × 52) = $52,000 / 2,080 = $25.00. Weekly pay on the same salary is the annual amount divided by 52, which is $1,000. A calendar month, meaning the salary spread across 12 months, is $52,000 / 12, about $4,333.33. Those three are different questions, and the result lists all of them so a weekly number is not mistaken for a monthly one.
Commas are optional. 52000 and $52,000 parse as the same salary. Change hours per week when the job is 37.5, 35, or something else. Change weeks per year when you know some weeks are unpaid. A zero in either box is rejected, because the year would have no hours to divide by.
When 2,080 is the wrong year
40 × 52 assumes a paid week every week, with no extra straight-time hours. A job with three unpaid weeks is closer to 40 × 49. A 37.5-hour week for 52 weeks is 1,950 hours, and $52,000 divided by 1,950 is about $26.67, not $25. The form will follow whatever you type. It will not guess your PTO policy.
Going the other direction, from an hourly offer to a yearly number, is the hourly to salary calculator. A percent on top of either figure is the pay raise calculator. If you need the hourly rate so you can price a long week, take the result to the overtime calculator.
This is not automatically the FLSA regular rate
Dividing salary by 2,080 is the schedule conversion people use to compare offers. It is not always the regular rate that overtime law uses for a nonexempt employee. Bonuses, differentials, and the way the salary is earned can change that rate. This page does not model those pieces. The FLSA overtime summary says that plainly and points at the Department of Labor. It will not tell you that a particular salary is exempt.
Hours on a timesheet still need a decimal before they are multiplied by the rate you just found. 8:30 is 8.50, not 8.30. The hours to decimal calculator does that conversion, and the minutes to decimal hours page starts from minutes alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is $52,000 a year as an hourly rate?
At 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, $52,000 divided by 2,080 hours is $25 an hour.
Why 2,080 hours?
40 hours times 52 weeks is 2,080. That is a common full-time year with no unpaid weeks. If you have unpaid leave, lower the weeks. If you work 37.5 hours, change the weekly hours.
Is this the rate my employer must use for overtime?
Not always. A nonexempt salary can have a regular rate that is more involved than salary divided by 2,080, especially when bonuses or extra hours are part of the week. This page is the simple schedule conversion.
