$25 × 1.5 = $37.50 an hour. Eight overtime hours are $300.00. Half of $25 is $12.50, and that half is already included in the $37.50.

A number of hours, or a clock time such as 5:30.

Time and a half

Estimate for personal reference only. Not tax, legal, or employment advice. Overtime defaults follow a federal FLSA-style workweek, usually 1.5× after 40 hours. State and city rules may differ.

Thirty-seven fifty, not twenty-five fifty

A $25 wage sometimes gets “a little extra” in conversation, as if time and a half meant adding a fraction of a dollar. The multiplier applies to the whole rate. Twenty-five times one and a half is thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents. One overtime hour is $37.50. Two hours are $75. Eight hours, the example button, are $300. Straight time for those eight hours would have been $200. The extra half is $100, eight times $12.50, and it sits inside the $300.

Leave the checkbox on when every hour you type is an overtime hour. Uncheck it only when the box holds an entire workweek and the first 40 hours should stay at $25. Forty-five hours then pays $1,000 regular and $187.50 overtime, gross $1,187.50. The overtime calculator is the cleaner place for that weekly split, because its headline is the workweek rather than a prefilled rate. This page keeps $25 in the rate field on purpose. Clear it and the time and a half calculator is the same math without a starting wage.

A $25 salary hour is a different question

If $25 came from a $52,000 salary divided by 40 hours and 52 weeks, that division is the salary to hourly calculator. Time and a half of that derived rate is still $37.50 only if $25 is truly the regular rate for the overtime hour. A salary that already covers a fluctuating week, or a bonus the regular rate must include, can change the base. This form does not detect that. It multiplies the rate you leave in the box.

Decimal hours matter at this wage because ten cents of an hour is real money. 0.10 hours at $37.50 is $3.75. Six minutes is that tenth. Convert the timesheet on the hours to decimal calculator before you price a partial hour. Nearby prefilled rates are time and a half for 20 an hour and time and a half for 18 an hour. The reason the default line is still 40 hours in the workweek, even on a biweekly check, is overtime after 40 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much is time and a half for 25 an hour?

The overtime rate is $37.50 an hour. That is $25 times 1.5. Eight overtime hours are $300.

Why is a $25 straight-time hour not $25.50 at time and a half?

Time and a half multiplies the whole rate by 1.5. It does not add fifty cents. $25 times 1.5 is $37.50.

Does this page decide that I am owed overtime?

No. It prices hours you already treat as time and a half. Exemption, a different state rule, or a bonus in the regular rate can change what an employer owes.
